“Go for Broke”: Remembering the Valor of the 442nd Regiment
On this day (Oct. 30) in 1944, after six relentless days of combat, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team of Japanese American soldiers achieved the historic rescue of over 200 men from the 141st Infantry Regiment trapped by German forces in the Vosges Mountains, France, later called the "Lost Battalion." Fighting through icy rain, dense forests and nearly insurmountable terrain riddled with mines, the Nisei soldiers of the 442nd endured heavy losses, using only what they could carry and displaying unmatched valor. Their courage included heroic actions by soldiers like Private Barney Hajiro and Private George Sakato, who both single-handedly took down enemy positions under intense fire, inspiring their comrades to press on. By the time they broke through, the 442nd had suffered hundreds of casualties in one of the bloodiest battles for any U.S. unit. The rescue became a testament to their motto, "Go for Broke," and earned the 442nd the distinction of being the most decorated unit of its size in American military history.
